An editor is an author’s first follower

I love sincerity, enthusiasm and good advice.

Which is why @screeny, who knows me so well, passed me the link to this TED talk from Derek Sivers (the Dancing Guy) on the importance of the “first follower.”

We’re told we all need to be leaders, but that would be really ineffective.

The best way to make a movement, if you really care, is to courageously follow and show others how to follow.

When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to…stand up and join in.

It’s such a simple idea.

Leadership doesn’t exist without a team. The role of the follower is integral and active–not passive.

Add conviction, as so beautifully expressed by poet Taylor Mali below, and stand back.

We followers just might start a movement for those writers we love.
